Introduction to Weeding

We believe that responsible weed control is an art. So we’ve put together some fundamental info about those mean, green outdoor nuisances. Let’s get back to basics and get to know weeds.

WHAT’S A WEED ANYWAY?

Picture a “weed”...

You’re probably imagining a dandelion, crabgrass, or some other common plant that pops up all over the place. But have you ever thought about what really makes those plants weeds? It’s pretty simple. A weed is any wild plant that’s growing where it’s not supposed to. Even plants that you find desirable can become weeds if they overstep their bounds.

WHAT CAUSES WEEDS?

Most weeds churn out seeds like crazy. And those seeds spread all over the place via birds, wind, and other means. Some seeds stay in the soil for years, so predicting where the next weed will pop up is nearly impossible.

I CAN JUST PULL WEEDS, RIGHT?

It’s tempting to tug weeds out of the ground as they appear, but that can actually worsen your woes.

When you pull a weed, part of the root system can be left behind. There’s usually enough root left for the weed to regrow with a vengeance. Weeds like dandelion and Canadian thistle are notorious for regrowing after being pulled.

Plus, when you pull a weed, buried seeds come along for the ride.

Sometimes, a change of scenery from deep soil to shallow soil is all it takes to trigger the germination process. So when you shut the door on one weed, you might open the door for several more.

THEN HOW SHOULD I CONTROL WEEDS?

One of the best ways to control weeds is by using Roundup® Lawn & Garden products. They stop weeds all the way down to the root, without drawing seeds to the surface.

And since you won’t be pulling weeds by hand, Roundup® Lawn & Garden products can save you time and physical strain. Your landscape will thank you now, and your back will thank you later.
